Researching Annuities

I've been looking at single premium immediate annuities online and I'm trying to decide if this is a way to go. Are annuities good? Are they good to have right now? Are they safe in this economy? Since I'm not too educated on this I'm really not sure what's the best way to go. I guess I'll just have to keep researching until I find a better answer.
